Cold shooting, turnovers hinder BU women in loss to Saint Joseph's

RENSSELAER, Ind. — A three-game winning streak to start Great Lakes Valley Conference play has given way to a three-game skid for the Bellarmine University women's basketball team.

Frigid shooting and a heap of turnovers did in the Knights on Saturday at the Richard F. Scharf Alumni Fieldhouse as Saint Joseph's collected a 61-48 victory over BU behind 19 points from Kalea Parks and 17 from Courtney Kvachkoff.

Freshman forward Beth Bowers had nine points and seven rebounds for Bellarmine (8-6, 3-3 GLVC), which didn't have a player reach double figures in the scoring column. Sophomore guard Destony Curry added eight points while senior forward Morgan Clemons had seven and eight rebounds against the Pumas (5-11, 2-5), who snapped a four-game losing streak.

After Bellarmine gained a three-point lead at halftime, Saint Joseph's owned the second half by outscoring the Knights 42-26. The Knights have typically played their best basketball this season after the intermission, but BU never got going offensively and finished with its lowest point total this year and its lowest field-goal percentage (26.2). The Knights only made one of their 21 attempts from 3-point range. Bellarmine also had a season-high 29 turnovers, although Saint Joseph's had 25.

Both squads struggled mightily to take care of the ball in the first half. They combined for 35 turnovers before the intermission, with Bellarmine committing 18 giveaways while Saint Joseph's had 17. The Knights sank 9 of 10 from the free throw line before the break while the Pumas were only 1 of 3, which allowed BU to hold a 22-19 advantage heading into the locker room.

Saint Joseph's knotted it up 12 seconds into the second half on a 3-pointer by Lauren Davis. The Knights only trailed by one on a Curry jumper with 13:39 left, but the Pumas responded with an 8-0 run. They eventually built a double-digit lead with roughly 5 minutes left and led by as many as 17.

Bellarmine completes its five-game road stretch with a 6:15 p.m. (ET) matchup Monday at Southern Indiana.
