Knights take down Wayne State 3-1 to open Crossover Tourney

AURORA, Ill.—The Bellarmine University  volleyball team scored a win for themselves and the Great Lakes Valley Conference today as they opened the Mizuno Midwest Crossover Volleyball Tournament with a 3-1 (25-16, 25-22, 25-25, 28-26) over Wayne State University.

The Knights were led by Ashley Jefferson and Hayden Dailey with 13 kills apiece. Jefferson was efficient on the offense end, swinging at a .440 hitting percentage, and she made her presence known on the defensive end with four assisted blocks.

Bellarmine got off to a roaring start, hitting nearly .400 in the first set to cruise to a 25-16 victory.  The Knights cooled a bit to hit .246 on the match as a whole. Defensively, Bellarmine was able to hold the Warriors to just .147 hitting as the Knights outdug WSU 65-54 and out-blocked them 8-5.

Megan Kimbley also turned a solid performance for the Knights with 11 kills, and setter Allie Muha added 13 digs to her 35 assists for another double-double. Jordyn Kuchenbrod registered a game-high 17 digs and Dailey came up with 12 to go along with her 13 kills.

Wayne State, which came in as the No. 13 seed on the GLIAC side of the tourney, proved to be a tough out. First they stiffened for a 25-22 set three victory then fended off three match points before Bellarmine finally took the win.

The Warriors got a solid effort from Louisville native Hannah Moore, who led all hitters with 19 kills. Moore's appearance against the Knights set-up a sibling rivalry scenario as the Assumption High School graduate also is the younger sister of Bellarmine Assistant Coach Paige Moore.

The Knights came in the No. 14 seed on the GLVC side of the tournament, which pits teams from three different conferences from the Midwest Region against one another. After three of the six sessions, the GLVC holds a slim lead with a 13-11 record while the GLIAC is 12-12 and the G-MAC is 1-5.

Bellarmine, which improved to 8-12 on the year, faces two matches in tomorrow's final day.  At 10 a.m. (CDT) the Knights take on Lake Superior State and conclude the tourney against Northern Michigan.
