ST. CHARLES, Mo.—Bellarmine sophomore
Elle Lichte connected for a goal 4:17 into the overtime period to lift the Knights past Dowling 3-2 in an NCAA Division II field hockey game played at Lindenwood University on Saturday.
The Knights dominated the offense on the day, but converted just three of their 35 shots. The Golden Lions shot 21 times but scored just twice.
Although the final statistics showed frustration on the offensive end of the field, the game started rather quickly with Bellarmine's
Aimee Ilgenfritz drilling a goal just 1:51 into the proceedings. However, the scoring was short lived as the Knights came up empty on their other 15 shots in the half.
Dowling, meanwhile, got off just six first half shots but tied the score in the 26
th minute when Sarah Shams-Kollar scored the first of her two goals on the day.
The second half was similar to the first with Bellarmine scoring rather quickly when Lichte registered her first goal of the day 2:43 into the second half. The Golden Lions came back to knot the game at two about six minutes later, and the teams failed to score the final 26:16 of regulation.
The overtime period was all Bellarmine as the Knights fired off six shots in the extra session compared to none for Dowling.
The Knights improve to 8-5 on the season while Dowling falls to 4-9 on the season.
Bellarmine is back in ECAC action next weekend, facing Limestone and Newberry on Oct. 24 and 25 to complete their regular season conference slate.
