Bellarmine falls 2-1 as Lions notch pair of first half goals

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The visiting Lindenwood Lions got two first half goals from Greta Bonholzer and hung on for the 2-1 victory over Bellarmine University this afternoon in an ECAC Division II field hockey contest at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.

The Lions got on the board in the 28th minute with a transition goal when Shelby Easley took a pass in the box and forwarded ahead to Greta Bonholzer who finished the play by sneaking the ball into the right side of the cage.

Banholzer—last year's ECAC "Rookie of the Year"—struck again three minutes later, this time finishing off a set play off a penalty corner.

When the horn sounded for halftime, the Knights found themselves in a 2-0 deficit despite getting off two more shots (6-4) than the Lions as Lindenwood converted two of their three on-goal shots.

The Knights finally broke through with just 1:19 left in the game as Kathryn Schneidtmiller finished off a penalty corner off a nice feed from Kelsey O'Bryan.

Unfortunately, the offense came a little too late as the Lions were able to clear the ball out of the Bellarmine offensive end on the ensuing possession and kill the clock.

The second half proved to be a defensive battle with both teams firing 10 shots.  In the cage for the Knights, Sara Nicolas came up with five stops while Mary Ringwald swatted away another Lion attempt for a defensive save.

The final statistics showed that the Knights had their chances, owning advantages in both shots (16-14) and penalty corners (11-6). Lindenwood responded, however, as Lion goalie Victoria Gil made eight saves on the day.

Lindenwood, 5-4 overall, comes away as the clear leader in the ECAC standings and is now 3-0 in league play having beaten all three other conference teams.  Bellarmine drops to 5-3 on the season and is 0-2 in league play.

The Knights return to action against in-state rival Centre College on Oct. 7.  The game, which will played in Danville, is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
