LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Once again, the Bellarmine University women's basketball team had four players score in double figures. The Knights' penchant for taking control in the third quarter was present as well.
But on Friday at Alderson Broaddus, BU added dominant rebounding to the mix in an 82-73 victory over the Battlers at Rex Pyles Arena.
Junior forward
Sarah Galvin posted a double-double with a game-high 23 points and 11 rebounds for Bellarmine, which has started the season 6-0 for the first time since 2003-04 despite a tough challenge from Alderson Broaddus (1-7).
In addition to Galvin, who has led or tied for the team lead in scoring in every game, junior guard
Destony Curry drained three 3-pointers in scoring 15 points and added six rebounds and four assists. Junior guard
Whitney Hartlage accounted for 12 points via four trifectas, sophomore forward
Beth Bowers chipped in 10 points, sophomore forward
Brooke Valentine grabbed 10 rebounds and senior guard
Mackenzie Martinez dished out nine assists and had three steals.
Led by Galvin and Valentine, Bellarmine owned a commanding 54-27 rebounding advantage, including 23 offensive boards. That contributed to the Knights outscoring the Battlers 48-34 in the paint.
Things didn't start out well for Bellarmine, which fell behind 21-15 after the first quarter. It wasn't out of the ordinary for the Knights, who thus far this season have asserted themselves in the middle portions of games. Indeed, a little over two minutes into the second quarter, BU gained the lead on a 3-pointer by Curry.
Alderson Broaddus regained the advantage, but Bellarmine seized momentum heading into the intermission with a 7-0 run as Valentine scored a pair of baskets and Curry nailed a 3-pointer for a 41-38 lead.
Bellarmine carried that play into the third quarter, as the Knights' lead swelled to 12 when Hartlage wrapped a pair of 3-pointers around a basket by Bowers. BU entered the fourth quarter ahead 60-51.
In the final period, Alderson Broaddus cut a 14-point deficit to six with 6:02 left, but Hartlage answered with a 3-pointer and Galvin converted a pair of timely buckets down the stretch as the Knights kept the Battlers at bay.
Bellarmine shot 53.1 percent (17 of 32) in the second half, including 55.6 percent (5 of 9) from 3-point land.
Bellarmine will host Ferris State at 3 p.m. (ET) on Dec. 19 at Knights Hall.
