LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The No. 8 Limestone Saints spoiled the Bellarmine Knights' home and conference opener by coming into Owsley B. Frazier Stadium and leaving with a 2-1 victory under rainy, wet conditions.
As the score would indicate, tonight's game was mostly a defensive battle with the teams combining for just eight shots on goal.
Limestone's Brittany Carney registered the only goal of the first half when she finished off a near flawless play off a penalty corner with Stembeni Zhanda providing the assist in the 19
th minute of action.
Eight minutes into the second half, Rylie Whiting put the Saints up 2-0 on another Zhanda assist. The Knights got on the board with about 11 and a half minutes remaining when
Alexis Van Wallaghen corralled a pass from
Hannah Doll and split a pair of Limestone defenders for her second goal of the season.
The Knights could not complete the comeback, but stayed in contention with solid defense, including a defensive save by
Mary Ringwald.
For the game, Limestone owned advantages in shots (9-5) and penalty corners (7-5). Bellarmine goalkeeper
Alexandra Moro posted three saves while Tabia Cochran came up with one stop for the Saints.
The Knights' next four games are all on the road, with Bellarmine returning to Frazier Stadium on Oct. 3 to host Lindenwood in another conference match.
