GREENSBURG, Pa. — The Bellarmine University field hockey team engaged in a back-and-forth goal fest with Seton Hill in the first half of Saturday's match.
The visiting Knights clamped down defensively after the break, shutting out the Griffins in the second half and adding an insurance goal to pull away for a 5-3 victory.
Bellarmine (4-2) showcased a balanced offense that saw five different players score. Junior forward
Kathryn Schneidtmiller, senior forward
Alexis Van Wallaghen, senior midfielder
Hannah Doll, sophomore midfielder
Elle Lichte and freshman forward
Mollie Reese each scored one goal against Seton Hill (0-7).
In the first half, Bellarmine scored first before Seton Hill put away the next two goals. The Knights then found the net three straight times, but the Griffins answered to cut their deficit to 4-3 at halftime. That rapid clip of goal scoring was not sustained in the second half as BU posted the lone goal.
Considering the teams combined for seven goals before the intermission, it actually took a little while for the first score to occur. The Knights got on the board when Van Wallaghen spotted Schneidtmiller in the 13th minute.
The goals came fast and furious after that. Seton Hill's Molly Childress scored a pair in a little over two minutes to give the Griffins a 2-1 lead in the 21st minute.
The Knights responded with their own flurry of goals. In less than eight minutes, Van Wallaghen, Doll and Lichte all located the net as BU surged to a 4-2 lead. Junior forward
Kelsey O'Bryan and junior midfielder
Aimee Ilgenfritz assisted on the latter two goals.
Childress once again had an answer for Seton Hill as she delivered a hat trick by scoring a little over a minute before halftime as the Griffins battled back to within 4-3.
The offenses quieted down after the break. O'Bryan assisted to Reese on a give-and-go for the lone score, which came in the 62nd minute. It was the first goal of Reese's collegiate career.
Bellarmine racked up 23 shots, including 14 on goal. Seton Hill posted 13, with eight coming on frame.
Senior goalkeeper
Alexandra Moro and junior keeper
Sara Nicolas each played one half in the cage for Bellarmine. Nicolas accumulated four of the team's five saves.
