KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Bellarmine University women's soccer team recorded another shutout. Unfortunately, the Knights didn't tally another win.
On Sunday afternoon at Rockhurst, 15th-ranked Bellarmine remained unbeaten but didn't extend its season-opening winning streak as the Knights played to a 0-0 stalemate in double overtime with the Hawks in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.
The matchup pitted the GLVC preseason favorite Knights (8-0-1, 5-0-1 GLVC) against a Hawks squad (2-2-4, 2-2-1) that was tabbed to finish second. Sunday's final reflected that prediction.
"This was a very hard-fought result against a good team on the back end of a difficult trip," said BU Coach
Chris Tinius, whose Knights traveled 500-plus miles to meet William Jewell and Rockhurst. "It was hot and both teams were exhausted by the end of the game. I thought our physical work rate was very good."
Bellarmine's defense amassed its eighth shutout in nine matches. Sophomore goalkeeper
Taylor Smith was active with five saves, and Tinius noted she "made a couple great saves to keep us in it."
"Once again our defending allowed us to get the result," Tinius said. "That being said, it's not like we sat back. The game was wide open at the end, and both teams were taking chances when their legs allowed. If you're a little cleaner maybe you get a goal, but I think both teams could say that. All in all, I think this was exactly the kind of game we needed to continue to grow as a team."
Rockhurst was credited with 14 shots, including six on goal. The Knights attempted nine shots, with three coming on frame. The Hawks had an 11-8 advantage in shots in regulation and 3-1 in the overtimes, although possession was not lopsided.
"Rockhurst has a bunch of good players and came out with a good plan of how they wanted to attack us," Tinius said. "They are so dangerous on set pieces, which has been something we are shaky on, so to keep them off the scoreboard on those was very good to see."
Bellarmine will host Saint Joseph's on Friday and Indianapolis on Sunday on Alumnae Weekend.
"Now it's time to try and heal and get our legs back," Tinius said. "We'll enjoy an extra day off this week at the halfway point of the season and hopefully come out refreshed next weekend."
