MEMPHIS, Tenn.—After something of a sluggish start, the Bellarmine University volleyball team roared back to life to take a 3-1 (23-25, 25-18, 25-13, 25-16) victory over the Lyon College Scots in a neutral site match played at Christian Brothers University's Canale Arena.
Freshman
Aurryella Mason had the best match of her young collegiate career with 18 kills while swinging at a .429 clip. Mason even flirted with a triple-double by also recording seven assists and seven digs.
A total of five Knights recorded seven or more kills with
Ashley Jefferson and
Megan Kimbley each ringing up nine while
Margaret Horihan and
Katie Adams registered seven to go along with Mason's 18. With 60 kills in the match for Bellarmine, setter
Allie Muha was busy while posting 42 assists.
On the defensive side of the net, the Knights were led by a trio of Assumption grads. Freshman libero
Jordyn Kuchenbrod came up with 13 digs while defensive specialists
Abby Schlaug and
Phoenix Fowler had 11 and eight digs respectively.
After trailing 20-14 in the opening set, Bellarmine fought back to close the gap to just one point at 23-24. However, the Scots got a kill from Makenzie Sharp to close out the first set for Lyon 25-23.
Although Lyon won the set, the Knights had the momentum. Bellarmine broke out on top in the second set and then rode the hot right arm of Mason. The freshman outside hitter slammed home eight kills in the second frame as the Knights pulled away for a 25-18 victory.
Bellarmine closed out the final two sets with comfortable margins to improve to 2-1 on the season. Lyon suffered just its second setback of the year and now stands at 3-2.
