LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University women's basketball team didn't have a notable night at the free-throw line. That was about the only quibble one could make about the Knights' performance on Saturday night. And it didn't matter in the least.
In one of its most commanding and well-rounded performances of the season, Bellarmine built a double-digit lead at halftime and ran away from Indianapolis in the second half of a 70-50 romp over the Greyhounds at Knights Hall in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
Scoring came from a variety of sources for Bellarmine (15-2, 9-2 GLVC), which has a two-game lead over Saint Joseph's for second place in the GLVC East. Junior forward
Sarah Galvin paced the Knights with 14 points and nine rebounds, freshman center
Ally Mayhaus had 11 points and seven rebounds, junior guards
Whitney Hartlage and
Destony Curry chipped in 10 points apiece and sophomore forward
Beth Bowers contributed eight points.
Bellarmine put forth a thorough effort against Indianapolis (6-15, 4-7). The Knights shot 47.5 percent, outrebounded the Greyhounds 39-29, distributed 17 assists, led 21-10 in points off turnovers and had a 22-9 superiority in bench points. BU also knocked down seven 3-pointers to the two of UIndy, which shot 37.3 percent overall and 15.4 percent from long range.
Princess German had a game-high 19 points and Nicole Anderson added 11 for Indianapolis, but Galvin drained a 3-pointer less than two minutes into the game for a 5-4 lead and Bellarmine never trailed again. A pair of free throws by Galvin put the Knights up 25-16 after one quarter, and she scored five straight points and Bowers added a bucket as BU reeled off a 7-0 run leading into halftime for a 39-28 advantage.
The third quarter started as the second period ended, as Curry nailed a jumper 16 seconds into the half. Senior guard
Mackenzie Martinez converted a traditional three-point play as the lead ballooned to 20 with 6:31 left in the third. A couple more free throws from Galvin maintained that cushy advantage heading into the last period.
Bowers boosted the lead to 24 on a few occasions and sophomore guard
Raven Merriweather did another time as Bellarmine coasted to the victory. Eleven different players scored for the Knights, who posted back-to-back 20-point triumphs.
Bellarmine plays Thursday at Missouri S&T.
