Gorham leads late surge as No. 22 Knights earn 3-1 win over Missouri S&T

ROLLA, Mo. — One of the most gratifying aspects of the No. 22 Bellarmine University women's soccer team's previous four matches was the Knights went unbeaten and scored eight goals without requiring a single one from the prolific net-finding duo of Mary Beth Gorham and Lauren Holder.

Of course, while impressive, that's not exactly the sort of streak Bellarmine would want to get carried away with.

On Friday at Missouri S&T, the goal drought ended for both Gorham and Holder and the winning continued as the Knights defeated the Miners 3-1 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

Gorham scored twice for Bellarmine (10-1-2, 8-1-2 GLVC) against Missouri S&T (2-9, 2-8), including delivering the game-winner in the 85th minute after she got the Knights on the board in the seventh minute. After the All-American's second goal, Holder scored less than a minute later off an assist from freshman forward Olivia Taylor as Bellarmine continued a theme of winning on a Friday despite some shaky play.

"Well, we survived another interesting Friday outing," Knights Coach Chris Tinius said. "I thought our mentality after the early goal in the first half was less than optimal to say it nicely. In the second half, we had people step up and find a way to grind it out. I think we may petition the league to change to a Thursday/Sunday schedule next year."

Gorham collected a pair of assists in Sunday's 2-0 win over William Jewell, but she was in goal-scoring mode on Friday. Inside the first 10 minutes, the reigning GLVC Offensive Player of the Year buried a shot from 25 yards for a quick 1-0 lead.

Bellarmine jumped out fast, but Missouri S&T responded in the first half, as Kayla Foster sank the equalizer in the 40th minute. The Knights had a slim 6-4 edge in shots at halftime.

"Give S&T a lot of credit," Tinius said. "They played extremely hard and exposed almost every mistake we made. Any time we were stagnant off the ball or sloppy in possession, it was shoved right back down our throat."

Bellarmine largely dominated the second half, but Missouri S&T had an extremely promising opportunity to score with about nine minutes left before an open shot sailed high. About three minutes prior to that, Taylor had hit the crossbar for the Knights.

The near-misses would end when Gorham launched a missile from approximately 37 yards that slammed off the crossbar and into the net for the go-ahead goal with 5:20 left. It was Gorham's team-leading seventh goal of the season.

Holder didn't waste any time in giving Bellarmine some cushion. Less than a minute later, from the left wing, she received a pass from Taylor and laced a shot inside the far post from 20 yards for her third goal of the season.

"Special players being special helps mask a lot of problems," Tinius said. "Mary Beth and Lauren had great goals and Liv pitched in an assist. All three of our goals tonight were brilliantly struck."

Bellarmine finished with a 17-6 advantage in shots, including 11-2 in the second half.

The Knights play at 1 p.m. (ET) Sunday at Drury.
