Knights blank Mavericks 2-0

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y.—Bellarmine midfielder Elle Lichte provided all of the goals in the Knights' 2-0 victory over Mercy College today in an Eastern College Athletic Conference game at Mercy Field.

Lichte scored in each half on assists by Merit Harris and Dana Hemingway as the Bellarmine defense held the Mavericks scoreless.  Freshman goalie Heather Gregory recorded three saves, and junior Mary Ringwald came up with her sixth defensive save of the year to help the Knights register the shutout.

Bellarmine Coach Mark Blankenbaker said he was pleasantly surprised by the Knights' performance. "I didn't know what to expect today after playing at home most of the season and not being successful on our first road trip," he said.  "It was good to see us playing well together and getting the win."

Blankenbaker said that Bellarmine's offense came from  an unlikely source.  "Elle was a big factor today, and she is not normally scorer but took advantage of balls passed to her today."

Defensively, Blankenbaker said he thought Gregory made strides in the cage. "She faced several tough shots and all of the corners at the end of the first half, and she turned away some really good shots."

Bellarmine owned advantage in nearly every statistic, outshooting the Mavericks 15-6 and owning a 21-12 edge in penalty corners.

Today marked the second time the Knights have shut out Mercy, having dominated the Mavericks back on Sept. 24 in an 8-0 victory at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.

"Mercy has really improved since we played them a few weeks ago," Blankenbaker said.  "Their defense is good, and they played well together on the attack end."

The Knights return to action tomorrow with a game at Molloy College at 1 p.m.
