RENSSELAER, Ind. — The Bellarmine University men's soccer team would welcome an easy goal-scoring opportunity to come its way, but it took the spectacular version for the visiting Knights to pull out a 1-0 victory over Saint Joseph's on Sunday in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
Junior midfielder
Callum Southern scored on a bicycle kick in the 73rd minute to collect the game-winning goal for Bellarmine (4-6-1, 3-5 GLVC). Junior midfielder
Ryan Fagan assisted on the play that pushed the Knights past the Pumas (1-8, 1-6).
Sophomore goalkeeper
Zach Pogue posted his third shutout and collected four saves. Saint Joseph's attempted eight shots in each half to finish with 16. Bellarmine tallied 13 shots, edging the Pumas 5-4 in shots on goal.
The chance the Knights converted on came with less than 18 minutes remaining when Fagan spotted Southern in the box. He sent a bicycle kick into the net for his second goal of the season.
The Knights made that goal stand up, holding the Pumas to four shots the rest of the way and keeping them out of the net.
Bellarmine hosts Rockhurst and William Jewell next weekend.
