Knights post fourth straight shutout in 7-0 win at Belmont Abbey

BELMONT, NC— The Bellarmine Knights continued their recent streak with their fourth straight shutout as they swept past Belmont Abbey (2-9) at Alumni Field Saturday afternoon with a 7-0 win.

The last time the Knights and Crusaders met, the Knights had a 3-1 advantage. The story today included seven goals by seven different players for the Knights and a shutout.

The Knights (11-5, 4-2 Eastern College Athletic Conference) started off strong with a 4-0 lead at the half. Senior Kathryn Schneidtmiller picked up the first goal for the Knights 12 minutes into the match off a rebound, making this her 12th goal of the season. Just a minute later senior Alex Ginter fired a shot off a corner to senior Aimee Ilgenfritz who buried it in the goal. Sophomore Dana Hemingway put in the third goal of the game, making it her first goal of the season. Junior Lillie Nitzken tallied the final goal of the first half.

The second half included three more goals by three other Knights. Senior Kelsey O'Bryan put in the fifth goal for the Knights eight minutes into the second half with a flick into the back of the cage. The sixth goal of the game was by junior Sara Wilder off a straight shot and an assist from Ilgenfritz. This was also Wilder's first goal of the season. Junior Helena Varga had the seventh and final goal of the match.

The Knights outshot the Crusaders 31-1. Schneidtmiller lead the Knights with 7 shots while freshman Kayley Williams had the Crusaders' only shot.

Freshman goalie for Belmont Abbey Anna Fleetwood played all 70 minutes and had an outstanding 15 saves for the game.

"We've been working on scoring and we showed some improvement today," Coach Mark Blankenbaker said. "Seven goals from seven players is really nice to see."

"I thought playing on grass would have an effect today," Blankenbaker said, "but the girls did a nice job of blocking that out and just went out and played our game."

The Knights will take on ECAC rival Limestone College Sunday at 11 a.m. in Gaffney, South Carolina to finish out the weekend.
