Knights post 4-set senior day victory over Miners

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—Four different Knights posted double-doubles as Bellarmine picked up a 3-1 victory over Great Lakes Valley Conference foe Missouri S&T today on "Senior Day" in Knights Hall.

Hayden Dailey, Margaret Horihan, Allie Muha and Jordyn Kuchenbrod all registered double digits in two different statistical categories as the Knights bested the Miners 26-24, 25-16, 21-25, 25-21.

Bellarmine captured a close opening set in which neither team led by more than three points. In game two, the Knights stormed out to a 7-1 lead and went on to take nine-point win.

After the 10-minute break, the Miners turned the tables on Bellarmine by jumping out to their own 7-1 lead. Bellarmine battled back to trim the margin to just three on two different occasions, but Missouri S&T held on for the 25-21 win.

In the fourth frame, Bellarmine dropped the first two points, but roared back to win 10 of the next 12 points to claim a 10-4 lead. The Miners refused to go quietly, and climbed back within three points. However, Horihan closed the match with her 22nd kill as the Knights won for the 17th time this season.

Prior to the match, Bellarmine recognized seniors Ashley Jefferson and Abby Biggs, who were playing their final home weekend match of their careers. Both players had solid outings with Jefferson slamming home 13 kills from the right side and Biggs dishing out 10 assists—just one she of her season high.

Horihan, who added 14 digs to her 22 kills, registered her 13th double-double of the season. Muha (36 assists, 15 digs) and Dailey (11 kills, 13 digs) each recorded their eighth while Kuchenbrod (36 digs, 10 assists) chalked up her first double-double of the year.  The sophomore libero also set a new career high with 10 assists.

The Miners (9-16, 4-9 GLVC) were led by Carlie Combs with 12 kills while Claire Friedlund and Shelby Wagner added 10 apiece.

Neither team attacked with much efficiency as both defenses came up with several impressive digs. Bellarmine hit just .169 as a team while the S&T defense totaled 90 digs and six team blocks.  The Miners, on the other hand, hit just .158 as the Knights came up 101 digs and also posted six team blocks.

Bellarmine (17-9, 6-7 GLVC) swings back on Friday, Nov. 4 at Maryville University. The Knights will stay in St. Louis to face the University of Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday.
