Horihan, Kuchenbrod lead Knights to 3rd straight victory

ST. LOUIS—The Bellarmine University Knnights won their third straight match with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-12) sweep of Great Lakes Valley Conference foe Maryville tonight at Moloney Arena.

The Knights opened the match with a 5-0 run and went on to take the wire-to-wire first set victory. In set two, Bellarmine faced a 14-17 deficit but went on another 5-0 run to take control of the game and a two sets to none advantage. In the final set, the Knights took another wire-to-wire win, taking an early 5-1 lead and never surrendering the lead.

Bellarmine once again relied on the offensive and defensive tandem of Margaret Horihan and Jordyn Kuchenbrod.

Horihan posted 20 kills as she ran her streak of consecutive matches with at least 20 kills to seven. The outside hitter also contributed on defense, recording her 14th double-double of season with 11 digs.

On defense, Kuchenbrod averaged 10.67 digs per set by coming up with 32 on the night.  The reigning GLVC Defensive Player of the Week is leading the nation in total digs and increased her yearly average of digs per set to 6.69, which moves her into second place nationally.

Bellarmine setter Allie Muha just missed a double-double with 33 assists and nine digs, and outside hitter Hayden Dailey helped defensively with 16 digs.

Ashely Selman paced the Saints with 10 kills while Makayla Campbell and Cassidy Arndt came up with 13 and 12 digs respectively.

Bellarmine improves to 18-9 overall and even their GLVC slate at 7-7.  Maryville slips to 3-24, 1-13 GLVC.

The Knights will stay in the same city for their next match, which comes tomorrow at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Start time is scheduled for 4 p.m. (EDT).
