LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The No. 20 Bellarmine University women's soccer team collected an efficient and tidy 2-0 victory over William Jewell on Sunday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.
Sophomore midfielders
Jordan Chlebowy and
Audrey Van Der Elst scored first-half goals for Bellarmine (9-1-2, 7-1-2 GLVC), which ran its unbeaten streak to seven matches. Senior forward
Mary Beth Gorham assisted on both of the scores against the Cardinals (2-8-2, 2-7-1).
Bellarmine was coming off a somewhat disappointing 1-1 tie with Rockhurst where the Knights allowed a seemingly flukish goal and lacked sharpness in their attack. Bellarmine displayed precision in its follow-up effort, racking up 21 shots, including eight on goal, and limiting William Jewell to five attempts, with one coming on frame.
"That was a good bounce-back performance from Friday," Bellarmine Coach
Chris Tinius said. "Like we mentioned on Friday, it's not always about results and score lines. The process matters when you look at heading in the correct direction over the long haul. We did a good job of getting buy-in across the board today with respect to doing simple things in a better and more consistent way, and you could see a difference in our play."
Gorham came off the bench and made an immediate impact. Less than two minutes after the All-American entered, she crossed to Chlebowy at the top of the box, and Chlebowy ripped a shot inside the right post for her first goal of the season and a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute.
It wouldn't be long before Bellarmine bumped its advantage to 2-0. In the 34th minute, from the left side, Gorham crossed to Van Der Elst toward the middle of the box. She fired a shot from 10 yards that had enough zip on it to go through the hands of William Jewell's goalkeeper and into the net. It was Van Der Elst's fourth goal of the season, while Gorham has amassed four assists.
"We mixed up the lineup a bit today, and I was very pleased with what I saw," Tinius said. "We had some people really take advantage of their opportunities. Chewy is a great example of that with the first goal. We also had other people react very well to some challenges and show their game to be more focused and sharper. That's the mindset we need on a daily basis to maximize what we're capable of."
Junior goalkeeper
Taylor Smith notched the shutout, marking the third for Bellarmine in four matches. With a controlled effort spearheaded by senior midfielder
Sydney Kraus, the Knights' defense yielded only three shots in the first half and two in the second. Bellarmine took all seven of the match's corner kicks.
Another good sign for the Knights as the season has progressed is that they've been highly successful without Gorham and senior midfielder
Lauren Holder having to carry the scoring load.
"The variety of scoring lately has also been really good to see," Tinius said. "The last two weekends we've had seven different goal scorers, none of which are named Gorham or Holder. Both Lauren and Mary Beth have had assists and certainly had an impact as always, but we can definitely be a more difficult team to deal with when that many people are contributing."
Bellarmine plays next weekend at Missouri S&T and Drury.
