BLOOMINGTON, Ind.—The No. 3 Bellarmine Knights men's basketball team faced one of the best college teams in one of the best college environments tonight as they dropped a 73-49 decision to the No. 11 Indiana Hoosiers in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall tonight.
"This is a tremendous, tremendous learning situation," said Bellarmine Coach
Scott Davenport in his postgame comments. "In that locker room I just walked out of, I've got 13 guys upset that they let their teammates down—not about their (own) games. That is an amazing locker room."
The Knights head coach added, "Now we did get exposed by one of the best teams in the country…they are very, very good. But we only gave up one offensive rebound in the second half and our turnovers were down."
The host Hoosiers got a monster game from OG Anunoby, who hit 10 of 12 shots and scored 25 points in just 26 minutes of action. Indiana preseason All-American center Thomas Bryant hit 5 of 6 shots and scored 11 points and pulled down seven rebounds
Sophomore
Adam Eberhard paced the Knights with 13 points.
Rusty Troutman chipped in 10 points, despite drawing much of the defensive attention from the Hoosiers.
Indiana Coach Tom Crean said "(Bellarmine is) an excellent cutting, screening, move-without-the-ball, quick-passing team. Scott's teams are always so sound, and they always have guys that can make big plays.
Rusty Troutman is that guy, and he could play for any team in the country, and we treated him like that tonight. He may not start on every Division I team, but he would certainly play on them. We treated him like the star that he is, and he wanted to make life difficult for him. Our guys were locked in from the very beginning."
Led by Anunoby and Bryant, the Hoosiers outshot Bellarmine 46.8 percent to 36 percent. "The same shot you get against the Indianas and Louisvilles is just not the same shot," Davenport said. "You shoot it a hair quicker, you arch it a little bit more or you shoot it eight inches deeper, and it just doesn't go down."
After outrebounding Cincinnati in their first exhibition, the Knights faced a 40-32 deficit against Indiana. Senior point guard
Al Davis led the Knights' rebounding with six.
Bellarmine now moves on to face another elite college program in yet another outstanding environment as it takes on crosstown rival and 13th-ranked Louisville on Monday at 7 p.m. in the KFC Yum! Center.
