LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Bellarmine University volleyball team closed its home season in impressive fashion by rolling to a straight sets (25-11, 25-21, 25-16) victory over Southern Indiana in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match in Knights Hall tonight.
The Knights got double-doubles from
Allie Muha and
Margaret Horihan to lead the way. Muha, a setter, recorded a career-high 22 digs to go along with 32 assists while Horihan tallied a match-high 14 kills to go along with 13 digs for her 15th double-double of the year.
Bellarmine set the tone for the match early in the proceedings, scoring the first four points. The Knights simply kept the pressure on the Screaming Eagles by hitting .289 in the opening set and ran out to a relatively easy first set victory. Southern Indiana posted a .000 hitting percentage with eight kills but committing eight attack errors.
The Screaming Eagles took a slim 8-6 lead in set number two, but the Knights recovered in short order and regained the lead at 9-8. Bellarmine held on the lead for remainder of the set eventually posting a 4-point win.
In the decisive third set, Bellarmine got into a good offensive rhythm and rode a .325 hitting percentage to a 25-16 win.
Bellarmine's defense was solid all night with four different Knights coming up with 13 or more digs. Joining Muha and Horihan in double digit digs were
Hayden Dailey with 13 and reigning GLVC Defensive Player of the Week
Jordyn Kuchenbrod with 15.
Dailey narrowly missed her own double-double with nine kills on the night.
Bellarmine's
Ashley Jefferson, who was playing her last game in Knights Hall, had another efficient night. The hard-hitting lefty rang up eight kills on just 15 swings for a .467 hitting percentage.
Mikaila Humphrey paced the USI offense with 11 kills while Haley Limper led the Screaming Eagles defense with 19 digs.
Bellarmine improves to 19-10 overall and evened its GLVC record at 8-8. Southern Indiana slips to 9-19, 3-13 GLVC.
The Knights close their regular season on the road this Friday and Saturday with matches at McKendree and Illinois Springfield.
Bellarmine is still in contention for one of the eight GLVC postseason tournament bids. The top three teams from each division, as well as two wild cards, will advance to the championship. Currently, the Knights rank fifth in the East Division, but are just one game out of third.
