Knights women's basketball wins big over Maryville on Senior Day

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Senior forward Nicole Bryant buried a pair of 3-pointers and senior Mariah Gador nailed another. All three of the trifectas were compliments of passes from senior guard Mackenzie Martinez.

Senior Day was taken over by the Bellarmine University women's basketball seniors early, and the Knights went on to post a 78-59 victory over Maryville on Saturday in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

In its regular-season finale at home, Bellarmine (18-3, 12-3 GLVC) improved to 12-1 this season at Knights Hall. Sophomore forward Beth Bowers led BU with 14 points, sophomore guard Raven Merriweather added 12 and Martinez distributed a career-high 11 assists against the Saints (10-12, 4-11).

Bellarmine, which remains in second place in the GLVC East, was tied at 20 with Maryville after the first quarter but made headway in the second. Junior guard Kelsey Adwell converted a feed from junior guard Destony Curry for a 3-pointer 17 seconds into the frame for a lead the Knights would never lose.

Martinez found Bowers for a jumper to cap a 9-0 burst that gave Bellarmine some breathing room. The Saints cut it to three, but back-to-back 3-pointers from Martinez and Merriweather — who fed each other for the baskets — lifted the Knights to a 41-30 halftime advantage.

Curry opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer, and Bellarmine owned the period to lead 57-41 heading into the fourth. Maryville never got closer than 10 in the final period.

Bellarmine shot 50 percent from the field and 55.6 percent (10 for 18) from 3-point land. Bryant, Adwell, Merriweather and Curry all sank two 3-pointers.

Bellarmine plays Thursday at McKendree and Saturday at Illinois Springfield.
