JACKSONVILLE, Fla.—With just 41 seconds remaining in the game, Bellarmine's
Brian Wall got free on the left side of the goal and deposited a shot under the stick of the Jacksonville goalie to give the Knights a 10-9 victory over the Dolphins in a tightly contested Southern Conference lacrosse game at D.B. Milne Field on Saturday afternoon.
In a game that featured runs by both teams, the visiting Knights were facing a one-goal deficit after Jacksonville scored early in the fourth period. The Knights finally got the equalizer with 5:49 on the clock when
Dylan Gatt snared a pass from
Ben Charpentier in heavy traffic and coverted from just in front of the goal.
Bellarmine's
Connor Harryman won the ensuing faceoff and the Knights proceeded to possess the ball for nearly four and a half minutes but came up empty on the scoreboard as seven shots were either off the mark or saved by JU goalie Ben Gleichenhaus.
However, a Dolphin turnover gave the ball back to the Knights and Wall took advantage by hitting the eventual game-winner.
Bellarmine had to tough-out one final possession as the Knights'
Jack Perkins was flagged for pushing while battling for the ball on the faceoff, giving Jacksonville a man-up opportunity. A shot by JU's Cody Ford sailed high, but the Dolphins retained possession with 5.9 seconds remaining. Following a Jacksonville timeout, the Dolphins misfired on a pass, and the Knights held on for the 10-9 win.
Nine different players scored for the Knights with Gatt being the only Bellarmine player to score twice.
The game opened with Jacksonville scoring three times in the first 10 minutes while the Knights could not find the back of the net.
Harryman, who won 15 of 21 faceoffs today, finally got Bellarmine on the board in lightning-quick fashion, winning the faceoff at the 5-minute mark and racing downfield and beating Gleichenhaus for the score just five seconds (in game time) after JU had gone ahead 3-0.
After JU re-established a three-goal lead by scoring first in the second quarter, the Knights unleashed a 5-0 run to take a 6-4 lead with 3:15 remaining in the first half.
The Dolphins trimmed the score to 6-5 just before the halftime, but the Knights scored two early third quarter goals to establish their own three-goal lead at 8-5.
This time, it was Jacksonville's turn to go on a run, scoring four unanswered to take a 9-8 lead with 13:41 left in the game before Gatt and Wall closed out the scoring for the Knights.
Bellarmine owned a 43-32 shot advantage, and peppered the Jacksonville defense with 26 shots on goal, compared to just 13 for the Dolphins. Gleichenhaus turned in an outstanding performance for Jacksonville with 16 saves on the day while Bellarmine's
Chase Rose was forced to make just four saves to earn his third victory of the year.
The Knights improve to an even 4-4 on the year while upping their SoCon record to a perfect 2-0. The Dolphins slip to 2-5, 0-2 SoCon.
Bellarmine steps out of conference play for their next action, which is a March 26 road game at Providence College. Start time is slated for 1 p.m.
