Wiley, Spencer hurl Knights to split with No. 7 Hawks

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Zac Wiley couldn't get anything to drop when he was at the plate, but the freshman right-hander sure didn't allow that misfortune to affect his pitching.

On Sunday at Knights Field, Wiley fired 7.0 strong innings in leading the Bellarmine University baseball team to a 6-2 win over No. 7 Quincy after the Hawks took the first game of the doubleheader, 8-3.

Quincy (6-1) swept Saturday's contests and was looking for the series sweep, but Wiley (1-0) limited the high-powered Hawks to only five hits and two walks while striking out four and yielding two earned runs to notch his first collegiate victory for Bellarmine (4-6).

After hurling a complete-game shutout against Lee on Wednesday, sophomore left-hander Hunter Spencer came on for Wiley to start the eighth and tossed 2.0 perfect innings. He struck out two while lowering his ERA to 0.79.

With the score tied at 1, Wiley helped his cause in the fourth when he walked against Quincy's Mark Niebrugge (0-1) and came around to score on an RBI single by sophomore catcher Brady Pfaadt.

The Knights wouldn't trail again, shaking off a frustrating weekend where Wiley and teammates had numerous line outs that undermined their offense. In the fifth, they added three runs behind RBI singles by senior third baseman Cole Metcalfe and sophomore shortstop Drew Greenwood and, in between, a sacrifice fly lifted by junior first baseman Nick Wright. Metcalfe singled again in the seventh to help advance sophomore left fielder Griffin Neuer, who would score on a wild pitch.

Neuer and Metcalfe both had two hits in the second game. Metcalfe, senior center fielder Jes Staples, junior catcher Christopher Allen and freshman designated hitter Josh Finerty had one hit apiece in the opener.

Quincy began the day in the first game with five runs over the first three innings. Bellarmine cut its deficit to 5-3 in the fifth, but the Hawks scored three times in the seventh to pull away. Braden Shull (2-0) pitched 4.0 innings to earn the win.

Bellarmine plays Friday and Saturday at Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) University.
