Knights continue hot streak at home with sweep of St. Joseph's College

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Bellarmine softball team continued its hot streak with another Great Lakes Valley Conference sweep at Knights Field Saturday over St. Joseph's College (10-25, 7-9 GLVC).  The Knights shut out the Pumas 4-0 in game one with Kelly Ely tallying her sixth home run of the season to start the scoring.  Ally Foster followed suit, starting the scoring with a homer in the game two 4-3 win.

The Knights (21-19, 10-6 GLVC) will travel to Indianapolis to take on No. 1 UIndy in a doubleheader Sunday at noon.

Game 1 BU 4, SJC 0 (HTM BOX SCORE)

Bellarmine dominated the first game with Foster shutting out St. Joseph's and allowing only one hit.

The score remained knotted at zero until the bottom of the fourth when Ely stepped to the plate.  She lifted the ball over the left field fence to put the Knights ahead 1-0.  Olivia Russell reached on a fielding error by the pitcher, and advanced to second when Erica Knollman drew a walk.  Another error by the Pumas allowed Russell to make it home and extend the lead to 2-0.

The Pumas failed to answer back in the top of the fifth.  Megan Bretz started the home half of the fifth with a double to right field, advancing to third on Melissa Hammer's sacrifice bunt.  Another double to the outfield, this time from Foster, scored Bretz.  Katie Stamper continued the rally with a single to right field that drove Foster across the plate.

Bellarmine held onto the 4-0 lead for the remainder of the game, as SJC was unable to record a hit in the final two innings.

Stamper led the Knights going 2-for-3 at the plate and tallying a RBI.  Foster was credited with the win, striking out four batters and allowing only one hit.

Game 2 BU 4, SJC 3 (HTM BOX SCORE)

The Pumas drew first blood in the first inning with a couple of singles that resulted in a run.  SJC extended its lead to 2-0 in the top of the second.

St. Joseph added another run in the third before the Knights took control of the game.  With Bretz reaching first on fielder's choice, Foster stepped to the plate with two outs on the scoreboard.  She dug in and cranked out a homer to right center to bring Bellarmine within one.

The Pumas went three up and three down, sending the Knights back to the plate in the fourth inning.  Russell ripped a shot to right field to record her first triple of the season, and scored on Tabby Shewmaker's single up the middle.

Ely and Knollman teamed up to record the winning run in the bottom of sixth.  Ely singled through the left side.  Knollman's double to center field allowed Ely to score from first.

Foster contributed to the Knights' effort from the circle and the plate, going 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a run of her own.  Knollman went 2-for-3 and tallied an RBI.

Foster picked up her 14th win in the circle, tying Alicia Miller for the school's all-time wins record.
