LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Bellarmine University volleyball team continued its unprecedented success to open a season as the Knights extended their winning streak to eight games after posting victories over West Georgia and Alderson Broaddus today in the Holiday Inn Airport East Fair/Expo Center Bellarmine Classic in Knights Hall.
Bellarmine took the tournament title by going 4-0 over the past two days while St. Mary's (Texas) was the runner-up with a 3-1 record.
Margaret Horihan was named most valuable player of the classic, and
Hayden Dailey and
Jordyn Kuchenbrod joined her on the all-tournament team along with Jayla McCrary of Alderson Broaddus, Jaida Allen of West Georgia and Bree Perry and Shelley Chapron of St. Mary's.
Horihan, who recorded a career high 28 kills on Friday night, kept the hot hand as the Knights dispatched West Georgia 25-16, 25-27, 25-16, 25-13 in their opening match today. The junior collected a team high 14 kills while hitting at a .324 clip.
Meanwhile, Kuchenbrod and Dailey were helping the offense from behind the service line as each collected four aces against the Wolves. Kuchenbrod added 23 digs to her work in the match while Dailey notched nine kills and 12 digs.
Lydia Lange also was a force on for the Knights against West Georgia with nine kills and eight assisted blocks.
In the nightcap, Bellarmine rolled in straight sets over Alderson Broaddus 25-15, 25-18, 25-17 as Dailey rang up a game high 12 kills and added 10 digs for her third double-double of the year.
Bellarmine (8-0) now enters the conference portion of its schedule, starting out with perhaps the most challenging team in the league. The Knights host the nationally-ranked Rockhurst Hawks to open Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Friday in Knights Hall. The Hawks were picked to win the GLVC's West Division and are currently ranked No. 24 in the nation. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
