LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Bellarmine University volleyball team suffered its first loss of the season as the Knights opened Great Lakes Valley Conference play against highly-regarded Rockhurst University tonight at Knights Hall. The Hawks scored a 25-17, 25-13, 17-25, 25-15 victory in the league opener for both squads.
Rockhurst, the preseason favorite to win the GLVC West Division, got 14 kills from Karli Reichert to lead the Hawks as they improved to 7-3 overall and 1-0 in league play.
After being soundly defeated in the opening two sets, Bellarmine rebounded with a commanding victory in the third set. However, the Hawks spurted with an 8-0 run midway through the fourth set to come away with a 25-15 win to secure the victory.
Bellarmine was led by
Hayden Dailey, who was the only Knight to reach double digit kills with 12. The junior also added 17 digs to record her fourth double-double of the year.
Jordyn Kuchenbrod, Bellarmine's sophomore libero, had a solid effort with 31 digs while adding seven assists.
Bellarmine, which fell to 8-1 (0-1 GLVC), returns to action tomorrow with another GLVC match against William Jewell. The Cardinals fell in straight set to Southern Indiana on Friday night.
The Knights also will take on Trevecca Nazarene on Saturday in a 6:30 p.m. match.
