Knights fall to William Jewell but gain split with win over Trevecca Nazarene

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Bellarmine University volleyball team split a pair of matches on Saturday, dropping a hard-fought 3-1 decision to Great Lakes Valley Conference foe William Jewell in the afternoon and won by the same 3-1 score in the evening over Trevecca Nazarene.

Junior Margaret Horihan, the reigning GLVC Offensive Player of the Week, continued to put up good numbers for the Knights, totaling 41 kills on the day. Meanwhile on defense, Bellarmine sophomore Jordyn Kuchenbrod came up with 56 digs on the day to increase her league-leading dig average to 5.95 per set.

In the opener today, Bellarmine and William Jewell played a four-set match about as tightly as possible with all four sets being decided by the minimum two points and three of the four extended beyond the 25-point threshold.  The Cardinals ended up outlasting the Knights 27-29, 25-53, 28-26, 27-25.

Horihan put up 25 kills in the losing effort while adding 12 digs.  Hayden Dailey also tallied a double-double with 12 kills and 16 digs.

Coach Jenni Grzebin said she thought her team played well enough to win, but simply came up short. "Looking at our statistics, I would think that is good enough to win most of the time," she said.

Bellarmine hit .242 and totaled 73 kills against WJC while committing just four service errors. The Cardinals, meanwhile hit .266 and rang up 72 kills but had six fewer attack errors than the Knights.

The Knights fell to 8-2 (0-2 GLVC) while William Jewell improved to 5-5 (1-1 GLVC).

Against the Trojans of Trevecca Nazarene, the Knights won going away. After dropping the second set to fall into a 1-1 tie, Bellarmine won the third set with a six-point cushion before closing out TNU 25-13 in the fourth.

Horihan again led the Knights with a game-high 16 kills while Kuchenbrod registered 29 digs.

Bellarmine now stands at 9-2 on the season, which is just one win shy of their 2015 total. The Trojans, out of the Great Midwest Conference, slipped to 5-6 overall.

The Knights hit the road for their next two games, traveling to Quincy on Friday and Truman State on Saturday.
