SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.—Homestanding Slippery Rock got a trio of second half goals to break a 2-2 halftime score and defeat Bellarmine 5-2 in a non-conference field hockey game at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
Bellarmine had jumped out to a quick 1-0 goal as
Lillie Nitzken rifled in a shot off the penalty corner insert from
Aimee Ilgenfritz less than five minutes into the game. The Rock responded with a pair of goals, but
Amanda Jaworski got the equalizer for BU off a feed from
Megan Carney to tie the game heading into halftime.
After the break, the Knights couldn't capitalize on a 10-1 advantage in corners while Slippery Rock scored three late goals to take the victory.
"It was a frustrating day," said Bellarmine Coach
Mark Blankenbaker. "We played well and dominated the stats, but we just could not finish. On defense, we let them dribble in the circle and get off uncontested shots."
Blankenbaker added, "Our effort was really good. We played together and gave it a good run. We're a good team, and we'll rebound for IUP tomorrow."
For the game, Bellarmine had 15 penalty corners while Slippery Rock totaled just four. The Knights also held a 16-14 advantage in total shots.
Bellarmine returns to action tomorrow at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
