Limestone edges Knights field hockey in overtime

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University field hockey team fell 3-2 in overtime to rival Limestone on Friday night at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium in Eastern College Athletic Conference play.

Senior forward Kelsey O'Bryan and freshman forward Merit Harris scored for Bellarmine (5-4, 2-1 ECAC), while sophomore midfielder Dana Hemingway added an assist against the Saints (5-4, 2-1).

After the score was knotted 2-2 at the end of regulation, Limestone scored in the 75th minute. The Bellarmine defense had a defensive lapse on a clear by Veronica Bosha, which allowed Maria Patterson to get behind the Knights and score a breakaway goal for the winner.

Five minutes into the first half, Limestone's Jette Diekmann scored the first goal of the match off an assist from Patterson. The score would remain the same at halftime.

Roughly four minutes into the second half, Bellarmine answered when O'Bryan scored on a rebound. It was her third goal of the season.

Harris also collected her third goal of the season. It came in the 52nd minute and gave Bellarmine a 2-1 lead. A pass from Hemingway got through the defense to Harris, who was in front of the goal and poked in the go-ahead score.

Unfortunately, with less than three minutes left, Kate Remley delivered the equalizer for Limestone, which defeated Bellarmine in the last two ECAC Tournament finals.

Bellarmine outshot Limestone 13-10, including 8-6 on goal. Early in the first half, junior defender Mary Ringwald picked up a defensive save, her fourth of the season.

"We played really well in the second half," Bellarmine Coach Mark Blankenbaker said, "but a couple of offensive plays let them tie it up.

"We need to rebound for tomorrow," he added. "I'm sure the players will be ready to get back into competition."

The Knights host Belmont Abbey at 2 p.m. (ET) Saturday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
