Grim's first collegiate goal lifts No. 25 Knights to 1-0 win over UIndy

INDIANAPOLIS — Freshman forward Spencer Grim scored her first collegiate goal as the visiting No. 25 Bellarmine University women's soccer team defeated Indianapolis 1-0 on Friday in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

Grim scored in the 40th minute off an assist from sophomore midfielder Erika Laws for Bellarmine (7-1-1, 5-1-1 GLVC), which won its third straight match. Indianapolis dropped to 4-5 overall and 3-4 in the GLVC in a contest interrupted three times by lightning delays.

"I'm very proud of being able to make it out of tonight with a win," Bellarmine Coach Chris Tinius said. "Indy is a good team. They've been very good Fridays and to handle the delays the way we did to get our first true road win was a solid outing."

With roughly six minutes left before halftime, Laws sent a cross that caromed off an Indianapolis defender to Grim, who tapped in her first goal in a Bellarmine uniform. It was Laws' first assist of the season.

"I thought this was the best collective performance from our bench so far this year," Tinius said. "Erika and Spencer connected for the goal. I also thought this was (sophomore midfielder) Jordan Chlebowy's best game of the year so far."

Senior goalkeeper Hannah Poteet recorded her third shutout of the season, finishing with three saves. Bellarmine held a 10-9 advantage in shots, including 4-3 on goal.

"It was also good to see us do some things to manage the game better than we have in the past," Tinius said. "We held it in the corner when we needed to. Hannah made good decisions of when to take the ball with her feet and help kill the game. Those are little things that help you through situations like we faced tonight.

"We need to thank our fans for sticking it out through the weather," Tinius added. "I also want to commend Indy's game-day personnel for the way they handled the logistics and kept us informed during the delays."

Bellarmine plays at 1 p.m. (ET) Sunday at Saint Joseph's.
