CHARLOTTE, N.C.—On Saturday, the Bellarmine Knights field hockey team experienced the euphoria of an overtime triumph, but on Sunday the tables were reversed as the host Queens Royals rallied from a two-goal deficit to defeat BU 3-2 in overtime.
The Knights had posted a 2-0 advantage less than 15 minutes into the game on goals by
Lillie Nitzken and
Caroline Krill. However, the Royals sliced the BU lead in half by halftime then scored the only goal of the second period to send the game to overtime.
Bellarmine got off a pair of shots in the extra frame, but Queens made good on its only shot in overtime as Mazvita Matsi scored her second goal of the game 10:45 into the overtime.
"After playing so well at times during this game, we made critical mistakes that led directly to three goals on our defensive end," said Bellarmine Head Coach
Mark Blankenbaker. "On offense, we had multiple one on one or two on one trips into the circle, yet we couldn't manage to get shots. "
For the game, Queens got off one more shot than the Knights (13-12), and held an 11-8 edge in penalty corners.
The Knights fall to 4-7 on the year, while Queens improves to 3-6.
Bellarmine returns to action on Friday as they step back into conference play to face the No. 9 Limestone Saints in Gaffney, South Carolina.
