LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Bellarmine volleyball team got 21 kills from senior
Margaret Horihan as the Knights swept the visiting Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-21) in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match at Knights Hall on Friday night.
Bellarmine registered 50 kills in the three-set match compared to just 29 for the Screaming Eagles.
Horihan, who swung at a .319 clip, was the only Knight to record double digit kills with
Hayden Dailey and
Abbie Oetting putting down eight each.
Setting up the offense was
Allie Muha with 41 of Bellarmine's 47 assists, while libero
Jordyn Kuchenbrod paced the defense with 23 digs. Muha and Horihan recorded double-doubles by coming up with 10 digs apiece.
Bellarmine took control about midway through the first set using a 5-0 run to turn a 9-9 into a comfortable lead. The Knights extended the advantage to as many as eight before settling for a 25-18 victory.
In the second game, the Knights established another eight-point cushion, but the Screaming Eagles won five points in a row to cut the BU lead to 21-18. The Knights regrouped, however, and won three of the set's final four points to win 25-20.
Southern Indiana came out in game three and grabbed a quick early lead then extended the advantage to five points at 14-9. The host Knights then unleashed a 13-2 run to essentially put the match away as they cruised to a 25-21 set three victory.
Bellarmine improves to 17-5 with the victory and sees its GLVC record rise to 7-3 while USI falls to 8-14, 2-8 GLVC.
The Knights now take on their biggest challenge of the season as they welcome the No. 1 Lewis Flyers to Knights Hall for a 3 p.m. match on Saturday.
