LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Goalkeeper
Taylor Smith, center back
Kelsey Lober and holding midfielder
Sam Tilton received generous support on Sunday in the Bellarmine University women's soccer team's final regular-season match at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium, but the senior trio was in no giving mood themselves.
The trio spearheaded one of Bellarmine's shrewdest defensive efforts of the season in the Knights' 1-0 victory over Drury in Great Lakes Valley Conference play on the team's Senior Day.
"I am very happy for our seniors and our team," Bellarmine Coach
Chris Tinius said. "We hope that isn't our last game here at home, but if it is it was a quality performance to end a quality weekend."
Freshman defender
Alex Harber recorded her first collegiate goal, a game-winner delivered in the first half for surging Bellarmine (7-3-4, 6-3-4 GLVC). Junior midfielder
Audrey Van Der Elst collected an assist against the Panthers (6-8-2, 4-8-1).
Bellarmine's defense recorded its fourth straight shutout and has allowed a single goal over its last seven matches. Smith registered her ninth shutout of the season, which is one shy of the single-season program record. She moved into second on the career shutouts list with 19 — Amy Kunowski is the leader with 35. Smith preserved her latest blanking by snatching a save with 12 seconds left.
That was the only shot on goal Bellarmine's defense yielded the entire match, and one of just two shots the Panthers attempted overall. The Knights didn't allow a single shot in the first half.
Bellarmine's improving attack racked up 18 shots, with 13 coming in the second half. Eleven of those attempts were on frame, as Drury goalkeeper Tina Haberberger notched 10 saves. The Knights converted on one of their five chances in the first half.
"We did a lot of things very well again today," Tinius said. "To hold any opponent to a pair of shots is impressive. We created 18 shots and even more good scenarios in the attack. It was a pretty complete performance."
Bellarmine's goal came in the 30th minute. Van Der Elst directed a corner kick to Harber on the right wing. With a stiff wind at her back, Harber fired toward the far post from 30 yards, clearing Haberberger and finding the net for a 1-0 lead.
With league matches still in progress, Bellarmine sat tied in fourth place with Southern Indiana in the GLVC standings. The top four are awarded hosting duties in the GLVC Tournament quarterfinals. The Knights conclude the regular season at 4:30 p.m. (ET) Wednesday at Missouri-St. Louis.
"We have to start translating increased chances into more goals," Tinius said. "We've been building and improving in a lot of areas, and it's time to cash in moving forward. By not converting at least one more chance, we have made Wednesday that much harder.
"We need our rest tomorrow. We somehow are one of seven teams in the league to have played a Sunday game against a team coming off a bye, and now we are the only team playing a midweek game against a team coming off a bye. We've done everything the hard way all year, and we'll try to get one more win that way on Wednesday."
