ST. LOUIS —
Mitch Lammert was gold on his shot two minutes into overtime.
On Wednesday in the Bellarmine University men's soccer team's regular-season finale, the sophomore midfielder's first collegiate goal came in spectacular fashion as he delivered the "golden goal" in the Knights' 2-1 overtime victory over Missouri-St. Louis in Great Lakes Valley Conference action at Don Dallas Field.
Sophomore forward
Tomas Bernedo distributed the assist on the game-winner for Bellarmine, which closed the regular season 11-4-1 overall and 9-4-1 in the GLVC. The Knights' nine conference wins ties a program record. Their 11 total victories is the most since 2009 and one shy of the program's best-ever tally.
The Knights tied for fourth in the GLVC with Indianapolis, but Bellarmine is expected to be announced as the fifth seed and the Greyhounds the fourth seed in the GLVC Tournament as UIndy won the team's regular-season contest.
Illinois Springfield was set to meet GLVC regular-season champion Rockhurst on Wednesday night with a chance to tie Bellarmine and UIndy in fourth, but the Knights and Greyhounds both owned the necessary tiebreaker over the Prairie Stars in regard to conference tourney seeding.
Freshman defender
Tyler Niemann scored his first collegiate goal in the second half against the Tritons (5-8-3, 5-7-2) as freshman defender
Greg Fischer pocketed his team-best seventh assist. Junior goalkeeper
Zach Pogue, the reigning GLVC Defensive Player of the Week, thwarted a penalty kick in the first half and a one-on-one attempt in the second half from UMSL's Pat Ries, who entered tied for the league lead in goals with 11.
Bellarmine won its fourth straight match and ran its unbeaten streak to seven despite perhaps being outplayed by Missouri-St. Louis. The Tritons finished with a 15-7 advantage in shots, including 7-4 on goal, and had a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. However, Pogue notched six saves, including stopping both a penalty kick and the ensuing rebound opportunity, and Niemann and Lammert converted as the Knights overcame their struggles.
Two minutes into overtime, Lammert from midfield made a short pass ahead to Bernedo and charged forward. Bernedo spotted him racing ahead, and Lammert took a quick dribble to his right to elude a defender and whistled a shot from 22 yards just outside the top of the box inside the left post for the game-winner.
Bellarmine had struck first in the 79th minute when Niemann socked in a rebound after UMSL's goalkeeper knocked down a free kick by Fischer. The Tritons tied it at 1 less than two minutes later on a free kick by Oscar Gordillo.
