LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University field hockey team returned to Owsley B. Frazier Stadium with a vengeance, piling up a season high in goals in a 5-0 romp over Newberry on Friday in Eastern College Athletic Conference play.
Senior forward
Amanda Jaworski recorded the game-winning goal while sophomore forward
Merit Harris and freshman forward
Mandi Isom amassed two goals apiece for Bellarmine (7-10, 4-5 ECAC), which had played 10 consecutive road matches before Friday's contest. Harris also tallied an assist against Newberry (6-11, 3-6) as did senior forward
Megan Carney.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Heather Gregory and the Knights' defense posted their third shutout of the season. The stingy effort included keeping Newberry without a shot in the second half, and the Wolves had only three attempts for the match.
"Our full field defense really inspired our play today," Bellarmine Coach
Mark Blankenbaker said.
With the defense thwarting nearly every Newberry opportunity, Bellarmine attacked early and often up front. The Knights built a 3-0 lead by halftime and fired off 23 shots in the match, including 16 on goal.
"We maintained possession of the ball on our offensive end of the field, and that translated to a lot of opportunities in our circle that we capitalized on today," Blankenbaker said.
Bellarmine got on the board in the 15th minute when Jaworski followed up a save with a rebound goal for a 1-0 lead. It was her second goal of the season and proved to be the only score the Knights would require.
However, they got plenty of insurance. Isom gave Bellarmine a cushion in the 17th minute when she gathered a deflection and put away a shot from close range for a 2-0 advantage.
Harris bumped the lead to 3-0 at the intermission when she charged into the circle on the right side and whizzed in a shot in the 30th minute. After the break, Harris hiked the advantage to 4-0 when Carney spotted her near the left post and she delivered her team-best eighth goal of the season, five of which have come over the last three matches.
Isom provided Bellarmine its season high in goals when she buried a shot from the right wing off a feed from Harris in the 60th minute. Isom has five goals this year.
"The midfield line of Lillie (Nitzken), Elle (Lichte) and Merit played really good today," Blankenbaker said. "Caroline (Krill), Amanda and Amber (Hill) were outstanding and turned Newberry back multiple times. Offensively, Mandi was superb — she is really starting to get comfortable and confident. Great team win. Now we need to get ready for tomorrow."
Bellarmine will host Belmont Abbey at noon (ET) Saturday in its regular-season finale. The match will represent Senior Day.
