Knights women's basketball rides big first half in romp over Northwood

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Sophomores Mallory Schwartz and Katie Downey registered career highs in scoring while junior Liza Tibbs and sophomore Mikayla Berry were one point shy of career marks in the Bellarmine University women's basketball team's 91-68 pounding of Northwood in the GLVC/GLIAC Challenge on Sunday at Knights Hall.

Bellarmine (2-0) swept both its games in the Challenge, defeating the Timberwolves (0-2) two days after dispatching Saginaw Valley State 66-53. The Knights carried over their dominant play in the second half against the Cardinals into the first half against Northwood, essentially putting the game away by halftime after leading 20-6 after one quarter and 45-20 at the intermission.

Schwartz, a forward, and Downey, a guard, set new career barometers for scoring after posting 15 and 11 points, respectively. Berry, a guard, was one off with 17 points and so was Tibbs, a center who had 10. Senior guard Raven Merriweather capped a splendid Challenge with 20 points behind 4-of-5 shooting from long range. Schwartz sank a trio of 3-pointers, and sophomore forward Allison Van Dyke nailed both of her attempts.

Bellarmine shot 51.9 percent overall and a sizzling 62.5 percent from 3-point range. The Knights were a solid 25 of 32 (78.1 percent) from the charity stripe. Bellarmine forced 21 turnovers and turned them into 28 points. The Knights committed only 10 turnovers.

Lindsay Orwat had a huge game for Northwood. She piled up a game-high 36 points being 12-of-19 shooting, including a 6-for-10 effort from 3-point land. No other Timberwolves player scored in double figures. Bellarmine limited Northwood to 43.4 percent shooting.

The first quarter was actually Bellarmine's worst from a shooting perspective, but the Knights still built a 20-6 lead behind an active press. Bellarmine's defense yielded only two Northwood field goals in the opening period. The Knights expanded their cushion to 45-20 at halftime after burying all four of their 3-point attempts in the second period along with 7-of-8 free throws.

Merriweather opened the third quarter by draining a jumper, and Bellarmine coasted to the victory in the second half. Northwood cut its deficit to 19 in the third period, but the Knights pushed their advantage to 28 on a deep 3-pointer by Berry. Tibbs responded with a short jumper the one time the Timberwolves got under 20 in the fourth quarter.

Van Dyke hit all three of her shots in finishing with eight points. Merriweather and Downey had six rebounds and four assists apiece. Tibbs added five rebounds, and Berry had a pair of steals.

Bellarmine hosts Alderson Broaddus at 1 p.m. (ET) Saturday.
