LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Senior guard
Raven Merriweather joined the Bellarmine University women's basketball team's 1,000-point club, but the Knights were defeated 77-63 by Grand Valley State on Sunday in Knights Hall.
Playing in their second and final game in the Bellarmine Thanksgiving Classic, the Knights (3-2) got a game-high 17 points from Merriweather, who became the 28th member of the program's 1,000-point club in the second quarter after requiring seven points to reach the milestone.
Mikayla Berry added 16 points, five assists and five steals against Grand Valley State (5-1). The sophomore guard had a rare four-point play to close the third quarter. Berry sank a trio of 3-pointers, while freshman guard
Breia Torrens chipped in eight points.
Bellarmine cut a 17-8 deficit to 30-25 at halftime, but Grand Valley State controlled the third period and extended its advantage to 60-44. The Knights were unable to get closer than 11 in the fourth quarter.
Maddie Dailey paced four double-figure scorers with 16 points for Grand Valley State. The Lakers shot at least 50 percent in each quarter and finished at 58 percent for the game. They knocked down 12 of their 24 3-point attempts.
Grand Valley State sank five 3-pointers in the third period alone and outscored Bellarmine 30-19 in the frame. Bellarmine got progressively better shooting from the floor but a 3 for 19 opening quarter helped lead to a 34.8 percent overall performance.
Bellarmine did force Grand Valley State into 25 turnovers, which included 11 steals.
The Knights will open Great Lakes Valley Conference play by hosting Lewis at 1 p.m. (ET) Saturday.
