COLUMBUS, OHIO — Junior center
Liza Tibbs produced a career game, but otherwise the Bellarmine University women's basketball team struggled mightily in a 93-73 loss to Ohio Dominican on Tuesday at Alumni Hall.
With the Knights (6-4) playing in their first road game of the season, Tibbs demolished her previous career high of 12 points by pouring in 26 points. She needed only one half to exceed the old mark after posting 15 points by halftime. Tibbs converted all seven of her shots in the first half and finished 11 of 15 while adding seven rebounds against Ohio Dominican (8-3).
Sophomore forward
Mallory Schwartz pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds, senior guard
Raven Merriweather scored 17 points and sophomore guard
Katie Downey chipped in nine points, six assists and three steals. Freshman forward
Lauren Deel contributed six rebounds.
Bellarmine had more rebounds (42-40) and assists (20-16) and less turnovers (17-19) than nonconference foe Ohio Dominican, but the Panthers had the far superior shooting outing. Despite going 4 for 16 in the last quarter, they still managed to shoot 51.6 percent overall while the Knights shot 39.2 percent.
Bellarmine's primary struggles came from the 3-point line where it was 1 for 22, but that wasn't the only shooting issue. The Knights entered the contest shooting 79.1 percent from the free throw line but only hit 14 of 22 (63.6 percent) against Ohio Dominican, which canned 24 of 34 (70.6 percent) from the charity stripe.
Alexa Fischer led four players in double figures with 26 points for the Panthers, who led 22-11 after the first quarter and 47-30 at halftime. The Knights never got closer than 14 in the second half.
Bellarmine returns to action Dec. 30 when the Knights travel to top-ranked and defending national champion Ashland.
