NEWBERRY, SC — Sophomore
Gage Branson and freshman
Alex Rhine both went undefeated and the Bellarmine University wrestling team notched its first dual victory of the season Sunday at the Newberry Duals.
Bellarmine collected a 28-10 win over Emmanuel (Ga.) College and fell 32-15 to host Newberry, 25-18 to UNC Pembroke and 28-20 to Coker.
Branson, at 141, and Rhine, at 149, both went 4-0 over the four duals. Freshmen
Eric Beck (165) and
Andrew Sams (174) each tallied three wins while freshmen
Caleb Yates (125) and
Brett Bryant (197) recorded two apiece. Senior
Mitch Rusch (184) registered one win.
"I was happy with getting our first dual win under our belt for the year," Bellarmine Coach
Spencer Adams said. "We nearly edged Coker as well but lost due to giving up bonus points at certain matches. Our middleweights had a strong showing and most of our individuals won some very important region ranking matches. It should also help us in seeding at certain weights going into our next tournament at the Mid-West Classic.
Alex Rhine and
Gage Branson had a great showing. Everyone is getting quality matches and showing improvement. Although we lost some tight matches, it will only make us better in the long run."
The aforementioned Mid-West Classic will take place Dec. 16-17 at the University of Indianapolis.
