Knights make home debut, but Wolverines claim 13-5 victory

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Bellarmine lacrosse team made its home debut tonight in Owsley B. Frazier Stadium, but the rain and the visiting Michigan Wolverines put a damper on the festivities as the Knights dropped a 13-5 decision.

Neither team's offense got much going to start the game as it was 10:45 into the proceedings before Michigan (4-0) scored the game's first goal—the first of five notched by sophomore Brent Noseworthy.

The opening goal seemed to open the flood gates for the Wolverines, who tallied three more goals in the first period to take a 4-0 lead.

The Knights (0-2) finally got on the board at the 12:47 mark of the second quarter. Tucker Ciessau drove right, but stopped and pivoted back to his left and rifled a sidewinder shot that beat Michigan goalie Tommy Heidt.

Michigan answered with goals by Decker Curran and Noseworthy before Ciessau took a nice feed from Brian Wall and converted for his second goal of the game to trim the Wolverine lead to 6-2 heading into halftime.

After the break, Michigan extended its lead to 8-2 before Jack Perkins answered for the Knights, finishing right in front of the goal on a pass from Andrew Schoeneck.

However, the Wolverines answered with three straight scores to pull out to an 11-3 lead heading into the final quarter.

Both teams notched two goals in the final 15 minutes with Graham Macko and Schoeneck registering the final two scores for Bellarmine.

The Wolverines owned advantages in virtually all phases of the game. Michigan outshot the Knights 48-31, picked up five more ground balls (17-12) and won 13 of 21 faceoffs. In goal, Heidt turned in a sparkling performance for the Wolverines, coming up with 11 saves.

The Knights hit the road for their next three games. Next Saturday, Bellarmine takes on Quinnipiac in New Haven, Connecticut with the Knights traveling to Marquette, Michigan to face Detroit Mercy and Ohio State in the Midwest Classic on March 3 and 5.
