A sophomore right fielder, Wiley piled up seven RBIs in the first game for Bellarmine (16-10, 4-2 GLVC) against the Bearcats (8-16, 0-6). The Knights racked up 17 hits in the opener and seven in the finale while committing a single error in the doubleheader.
In the tail end, Spencer (3-4) posted his second complete game and first shutout of the season. The junior left hander tossed a three-hitter while striking out three in 7.0 innings pitched. In the initial contest, Mathis (5-2) won his fifth-straight start, striking out four against no walks while allowing five earned runs in 7.0 innings pitched. Freshman right-hander
Jacob Nagel tossed 2.0 perfect innings of relief.
The hits came at rapid pace for Bellarmine in the opener, as senior designated hitter
Christopher Allen and junior second baseman
Alex Ralph both went 3 for 5, with Ralph tallying three RBIs. Neuer cracked a pair of doubles while junior shortstop
Drew Greenwood and freshman center fielder
Bobby Brokamp contributed two hits apiece.
And then there was Wiley. With the bases loaded in the second inning, he cranked a grand slam to left center for his third homer of the season. Wiley had an RBI walk in the first and a two-run single in the seventh for a whopping career high of seven RBIs.
The grand slam made it 8-0. Bellarmine had also ripped off four runs in the first. Greenwood and Allen got things going with consecutive singles to open the game. Ralph had a two-run single in the inning.
In addition to the big outputs in the first and second, Bellarmine rang up seven runs in the seventh after McKendree rallied to within 8-5. Ralph started it with a double and later had an RBI single. Sophomore first baseman
Jacob Pendred added an RBI double and junior catcher
Brady Pfaadt an RBI single in the frame.
With Spencer humming through the Bearcats' lineup in the tail end, it didn't take long for Bellarmine to notch the sweep. Greenwood doubled and tripled and was the only Knight with multiple hits.
However, Neuer dealt a crushing blow with a three-run homer to right in the fifth, his third round-tripper of the season. The blast made it 5-0, a score that stood. Sophomore third baseman
Josh Finerty had an RBI single in the first and the Knights added a run in the fourth.
The two teams will square off in another doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. (ET) Saturday at McKendree.
