LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University baseball team's offense continuously plugged away Wednesday, and the Knights were rewarded with an inspired win in the second game of a doubleheader.
After Lincoln Memorial exploded for 13 runs in the fifth inning of a 16-10 victory in the opener, Bellarmine battled back in the tail end and freshman center fielder
Bobby Brokamp completed the comeback with a walk-off RBI double in a 6-5 victory.
In the second game, Bellarmine (8-6) trailed Lincoln Memorial (9-12) 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth when junior shortstop
Drew Greenwood set up sophomore right fielder
Alex Phillips' sacrifice fly with an expertly placed single through the right side on a hit-and-run. The Knights then tied it in the fifth when sophomore designated hitter
Zac Wiley singled and eventually scored on a two-out infield hit by the speedy Brokamp.
After Lincoln Memorial regained the lead in the seventh with a run, Wiley got things going against Cody Hinson (1-3) in the bottom half with a one-out single up the middle and junior catcher
Brady Pfaadt was hit by a pitch. Sophomore first baseman
Jacob Pendred knotted it up at 5-5 when he blasted a deep shot to right that went for a long RBI single.
Brokamp followed by cranking a drive toward the left-field corner. Sophomore pinch runner
Jarrett Harness raced home with the winning run for the Knights, who racked up 13 hits in both games of the doubleheader. Bellarmine scored in 10 of the day's 14 innings.
In the finale, Phillips, junior left fielder
Griffin Neuer, junior second baseman
Alex Ralph, Wiley and Brokamp all had two hits apiece. Ralph had a two-run single in the first inning.
Senior right-hander
Will Birch (3-0) earned the win after pitching 1.0 inning of relief. Freshman right-hander
Jacob Nagel helped keep the Railsplitters at bay as the Knights chipped away with 2.2 scoreless innings of relief.
Bellarmine only had one less hit than Lincoln Memorial in the opener — 14-13 — but the Railsplitters accumulated an astonishing 13 runs on nine hits in the fifth inning. From a fielding standpoint, it was a mostly clean game as there were just two errors. The teams combined for 26 runs on 27 hits and only a single run was unearned.
In the first game, Wiley launched his second home run of the season, a two-run shot, and added a double. Senior catcher
Christopher Allen socked a pair of doubles, and Greenwood collected three hits.
Bellarmine will host Tiffin at 3 p.m. (ET) Saturday and noon Sunday.
