LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Coach
Renee Hicks believed that if her Bellarmine University softball team sprinkled in some clutch hitting alongside
Sabrina Fussenegger's high-efficiency efforts in the circle, the Knights' fortunes would immediately change.
And she was right.
On Saturday at Knights Field in Great Lakes Valley Conference play, Fussenegger was masterful in a sweep of No. 14 Indianapolis, firing two complete games while
Paige Dabney cranked a walk-off RBI double in a 2-1 victory and
Olivia Russell creamed a three-run homer in a 5-0 win.
Fussenegger (9-11) recorded her third shutout of the season for Bellarmine (17-23, 5-11 GLVC) in the finale. In 15.0 innings pitched over the two games against the Greyhounds (29-11, 10-6), the freshman right-hander allowed a single run — a solo homer to Taylor Podschweit in the opener — and struck out 10 against only two walks. Her shutout was a two-hitter, and she yielded just three hits in the first game.
Quality outings have become the norm for Fussenegger, who has allowed three earned runs or less in nine-straight appearances. Bellarmine had struggled to capitalize on this efficiency while losing six of seven games. However, the offense came through Saturday against Lauren Honkomp, who entered the day 20-2 but was saddled with both losses.
In the opener, the score was knotted at 1-1 in the eighth inning. Senior shortstop
Erica Knollman led off against Honkamp (20-4) by working a full count before singling up the middle. Senior left fielder
Rachel Fox then hit a hard grounder toward second that the infielder couldn't handle cleanly. Dabney, a freshman designated player, followed by missing a three-run homer by inches, ultimately drilling a game-winning RBI double off the left-center fence.
Podschweit had given Indianapolis the lead with a solo homer in the sixth, but Bellarmine tied it in the bottom half on Fox's RBI single through the right side. Seven different players accounted for the Knights' seven hits in the initial game.
A senior second baseman, Russell had a monster performance in the tail end, going 3 for 3 with four RBIs. With two outs in the third, senior third baseman
Kelly Ely and junior right fielder
Katie Stamper both singled, and Russell followed by tattooing a three-run drive to left center for her second homer of the season.
Knollman punched an RBI single in the fourth and, with two outs in the fifth, Stamper doubled to right center and Russell drove her in with an RBI single up the middle for a 5-0 lead. Knollman, Ely and Stamper had two hits apiece in the second game.
Bellarmine plays a doubleheader Sunday at Saint Joseph's. First pitch is at 1 p.m. (ET).
