Knights stop High Point 7-5

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Bellarmine lacrosse team pulled out a huge win today by knocking off Southern Conference rival High Point 7-5 in Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.

Shortly after Bellarmine freshman goalie Jordan Dondoyano came up with a crucial save with just over a minute remaining, the Knights' Ian Miller found an open net and ripped a shot from outside of 20 yards to seal the win with a goal with just 35 seconds left.

The win vaulted the Knights into sole possession of fourth place in the league standings, breaking a three-way between Bellarmine, High Point and Mercer, who lost to Richmond today.

Miller and Brian Wall scored two goals apiece to the lead the Bellarmine offense while Tucker Ciessau dished out three assists for the Knights.

Bellarmine faced 36 shots from the Panthers, but High Point got just 14 shots on frame, and Dondoyano collected nine saves.

Bellarmine, meanwhile, put 18 of their 30 shots on goal to overcome a solid performance by High Point goalie Tim Troutner, who came up with 11 saves.

The visiting Panthers drew first blood, notching the game's first goal 4:44 into the game as Peyton Garrett converted a Michael LeClair pass.

The Knights pulled even with just under four minutes remaining in the first quarter on Stephen Votto's third goal of the season.

After High Point pulled back out to 2-1 lead with 14:09 in the second period, the Knights shut out the visitors for nearly 28 minutes of game time while scoring three goals to take a 4-2 lead.

When the Panthers finally tallied another goal at the 1:27 mark of the third period, Bellarmine answered as Morgan Macko rifled in a shot with just two seconds on the clock to give the Knights a 5-3 lead heading into the final period.

High Point responded to the challenge by scoring two quick goals in the fourth quarter to even the score with 12:36 to go in the game.

Wall got the eventual game-winner for the Knights at the midway point of the fourth as he took a pass from Ciessau about eight yards in front of the goal and pivoted and fired a shot past Troutner.

In addition to the all-important final score, the Knights also won a few key statistical battles, most notably winning 10 of 15 face offs. Bellarmine also picked up three more ground balls and committed two fewer turnovers.

Bellarmine improves to 3-7 overall and evens its SoCon record at 2-2.  The Panthers fall to 3-8 with a league record of 1-3.

The Knights return to action next week when they host the league-leading and 14th-ranked Richmond Spiders at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 15.
