SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.—The Bellarmine Knights field hockey team dropped its third game in three days this afternoon when host Slippery Rock took a 2-0 victory in a non-conference game at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
The Rock scored one goal in the closing minutes of each half to notch the win. In the opening period, Courtney Page scored from just in front of the cage with less than a minute and a half remaining.
The final goal came with just 12 seconds remaining in the game. Bellarmine had pulled a defender trying to create offense, and Slippery Rock was able to exploit the weakened defense to make the final score 2-0.
"It was another tough loss today," said Bellarmine Coach
Mark Blankenbaker. "The encouraging thing was we played 70 minutes of team field hockey. Our goal coming in was to compete and play together. We accomplished that, but we just didn't put ball in the cage."
Bellarmine goalie
Heather Gregory racked up 10 saves on the day, and
Amber Hill collected a defensive save. Slippery Rock outshot the Knights 14-6.
The Knights have now lost four games in a row to slip to 1-4 on the season. "Losing streaks can either divide a team or bring them together," Blankenbaker said. "I know which one this team decided…work together. I'm proud of this team."
Bellarmine returns home for a Saturday ECAC contest against Lindenwood. Game time is noon.
