Taylor, Ferry score as No. 7 Knights blank Missouri S&T 2-0

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Sophomore defender Rosie Taylor and freshman midfielder Samantha Ferry netted goals, and the No. 7 Bellarmine University women's soccer team's defense notched a shutout as the Knights blanked Missouri S&T 2-0 on Sunday in Great Lakes Valley Conference action at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.

It was the first goal of Taylor's tenure, and Ferry extended her goals streak to start her career to three matches for Bellarmine (2-0-1, 1-0-1 GLVC). Junior midfielder Audrey Van Der Elst, sophomore defender Erika Joldrichsen and sophomore forward Annabel Moore registered assists against Missouri S&T (0-3, 0-2).

Bellarmine played on Friday night at Maryville in St. Louis before heading back home for Sunday's match. The double-overtime draw with the Saints coupled with the demanding travel seemed to have the expected effect of zapping some of Bellarmine's energy, but the Knights managed to grind out the win in their GLVC home opener by capitalizing off a corner kick and a throw-in.

"That's a good bounce back to make sure we got a win on the books in the first week of conference play," Bellarmine Coach Chris Tinius said. "I thought we had about 100 good minutes again this weekend, about half of each game. The problem is we played two games instead of one this time. We have to keep learning how to bring the energy more consistently."

The corner kick occurred in the 36th minute. Van Der Elst placed it close to the near post, and Taylor managed to sneak it into the net.

Bellarmine added a second goal shortly after halftime. Moore headed Joldrichsen's throw-in toward Ferry, who drove a shot into the net for her third goal of the season.

Senior goalkeeper Taylor Smith tallied the shutout and had three saves, including one deep in the first half on a shot from point-blank range. Missouri S&T held a 10-9 advantage in shots, although the Knights had a 5-3 edge in shots on goal.

"The positives for the day were a shutout, two gritty goals and starting conference play undefeated on the weekend," Tinius said. "Now we need to improve for a difficult weekend ahead."

Bellarmine will host McKendree on Friday and Southern Indiana on Sunday.
