Knights women's soccer edged 1-0 by McKendree in double overtime

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — True to form, the No. 8 Bellarmine University and McKendree women's soccer teams played a highly competitive match that was decided deep into the contest.

The Bearcats came out on top Friday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium, scoring with only 48 seconds remaining in the second overtime to defeat the Knights 1-0 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

"That game went about the way we expected it to and the way our games have gone with McKendree for the last four years. It was a battle," Bellarmine Coach Chris Tinius said. "I thought we took some steps forward, but we still left a lot of moments out there too."

It was the first loss of the season for Bellarmine (2-1-1, 1-1-1 GLVC), while McKendree (4-0, 2-0) remained undefeated.

With less than one minute remaining, McKendree's Madyson Mossman got freed up down the right side and capitalized on an open look while delivering the game-winner. It was one of only two shots the Bearcats took in the extra sessions.

McKendree finished with an 11-8 advantage in shots, including 8-2 on frame, but Bellarmine seemed to possess the ball more frequently. Bearcats goalkeeper Zoe Brochu made a nice diving save on a header by junior midfielder Jordan Chlebowy off a long cross from sophomore defender Rosie Taylor, representing the Knights' best scoring chance of the match.

"I thought the second half and overtime we were much more aggressive, especially to first balls," Tinius said. "There were a lot of positives from that. (Senior midfielder) Sam Tilton had her best game since rejoining the team. Jordan Chlebowy fell into a better rhythm too, and we started finding our wing backs a little more even if it didn't create exactly what we wanted."

Senior goalkeeper Taylor Smith tallied seven saves for the Knights, whose schedule does not let up. They'll host rival Southern Indiana at noon (ET) Sunday after the Screaming Eagles were idle today.

"I still think we are on the right path and sorting through things," Tinius said. "We knew we had a lot of things to figure out with the influx of new players. I think we are on our way to doing that and have a few more weeks before we want to be clicking in October."
