Williamson's golden goal pushes Knights men's soccer to 1-0 win over Bearcats

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Freshman defender Eddie Williamson delivered the golden goal in overtime as the Bellarmine University men's soccer team defeated McKendree 1-0 on Friday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.

It was Williamson's second goal of the season for Bellarmine (4-1, 2-1 GLVC) and came in the 94th minute against the Bearcats (2-2, 0-2). The Knights' defense notched its first shutout of the year.

In the overtime, freshman defender Greg Fischer curled a free kick into the box that the Knights attempted to head into the net. McKendree goalkeeper Ian Bender batted the shot down, but Williamson rammed in the rebound for his first collegiate game-winner.

Bellarmine finished with a 13-6 advantage in shots, including 4-2 on frame. Junior goalkeeper Zach Pogue notched his first shutout of the season.

Scoring opportunities were scarce. The teams combined for only six shots in the first half. Bellarmine picked up its play in the second half, limiting the Bearcats to one shot while attempting nine.

Bellarmine will host Southern Indiana at 2:30 p.m. (ET) Sunday.
