LOUISVILLE, Ky.—An incredible third set comeback by the Bellarmine Knights volleyball team paved the way for a 3-1 (16-25, 25-14, 29-27, 25-17) victory over the visiting Truman State Bulldogs in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match in Knights Hall on Saturday afternoon.
After splitting the first two sets in relatively lopsided scores 16-25 and 25-14, Bellarmine faced an 18-24 deficit in the third game, but fought off six straight set points during a 7-0 run that essentially changed the momentum of the match. The Knights went on to post a 29-27 win in the set, then kept the momentum in set four, jumping out to a 9-1 advantage. Bellarmine would go on to close out the match with a 25-17 win.
Offensively, Bellarmine senior
Margaret Horihan led all hitters with 16 kills and teammate
Lydia Lange recorded 10 while hitting .381.
However, today's match was dominated by defense as both teams hit under .100 on the day. The Knights totaled 48 kills in 174 attacks and hit just .092. The Bulldogs posted 15 team blocks to contribute to Bellarmine's 32 attack errors.
Truman State, meanwhile, hit just .045, converting just 156 attacks into 35 kills with no Bulldog having more than seven. The Knights posted 85 digs with five Bellarmine players recording 10 or more:
Jordyn Kuchenbrod (30), Horihan (16),
Hayden Dailey (12),
Karleigh Wilson (11), and
Allie Muha with 10.
With the victory, Bellarmine improves to 9-1 overall and sees its conference mark draw even at 1-1. The Bulldogs slip to 3-6, 0-1 GLVC.
The Knights now step out of conference for a Tuesday night matchup at Kentucky Wesleyan before returning to Knights Hall on Friday to host Wisconsin-Parkside in a GLVC match.
