EVANSVILLE, Ind.— A 10-0 run in the third set slammed the door on the host Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles as Bellarmine completed a convincing sweep (25-18, 25-19, 25-12) in a Great Lakes Valley Conference volleyball match at the Physical Activities Center.
Led by senior
Margaret Horihan and freshman
Abbie Oetting, the Knights "out-killed" USI 41-25 and outhit their hosts .268 to .028.
Horihan recorded 12 kills on 25 swings and hit .400 in the match while Oetting hammered home 11 kills on just 22 total attacks for a .364 attack percentage.
The Bellarmine offense also got a lift from sophomore right side hitter
Elizabeth Boyce, who made first start of the season and chalked up seven kills, as did senior
Hayden Dailey. Fueling the offense was setter
Allie Muha, who dished out 32 assists on BU's 41 kills.
Defensively,
Jordyn Kuchenbrod was the only Knight in double digit digs coming up with a match-high 17.
The Knights jumped out to comfortable leads in each of the first two sets only to see Southern Indiana mount comebacks. In the first set, Bellarmine saw its 19-9 advantage shrink to just 21-18 before closing on a 4-0 run. In game two, the Knights' 17-11 lead dwindled to just two, but again, BU closed by winning the last four points.
In the final set, Bellarmine blew open a close game as Dailey served the Knights to 10 straight points, expanding a 7-6 lead to 17-6. This time, the Knights squelched a Screaming Eagle comeback to win 25-12.
Bellarmine improves to 11-2 overall and 2-2 in GLVC play while USI slips to 3-10, 1-4 GLVC.
The Knights stay in the conference for a two-match road swing this weekend, playing at Illinois Springfield on Friday and at McKendree on Saturday.
