LOUISVILLE, Ky. — In yet another hotly contested match between the Bellarmine University and Limestone field hockey teams, the Saints managed to rally with two goals inside the last five minutes and held on to defeat the Knights 4-3 in Eastern College Athletic Conference play on Friday afternoon at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
"It was a hard lesson we learned today; we didn't play the full 70 minutes," Bellarmine Coach
Mark Blankenbaker said.
Senior midfielder
Elle Lichte and senior forward
Amanda Jaworski scored for Bellarmine (1-2, 0-2 ECAC), while freshman forward
April Paulson delivered the first goal of her collegiate career. Junior midfielder
Caroline Krill and freshman midfielder
Alex Hill collected assists for the Knights against the unbeaten Saints (3-0, 2-0).
After trailing 2-1, Bellarmine rallied to grab a 3-2 lead in the 61st minute when Jaworski redirected in a Hill shot.
With less than five minutes remaining, Bellarmine continued to hold the lead, but Kate Remley knotted it at 3-3 in the 66th minute with her second goal. Two minutes later, Remley accomplished a hat trick, getting free and sinking an open look for the game-winning goal.
"We made too many unforced errors in the first half and down the stretch," Blankenbaker said. "The overall team concept is still developing. We are showing signs of coming together, but we're not where we need to be at this point."
Limestone held a 20-12 advantage in shots, including 13-9 on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper
Heather Gregory tallied eight saves for Bellarmine. Senior defender
Mary Ringwald notched a defensive save.
The Knights began the scoring in the 17th minute when Lichte pushed in a rebound for a 1-0 lead. Limestone's Kate Norman tied it up two minutes later, and the Saints gained a 2-1 advantage early in the second half on Remley's first goal in the 39th minute. Bellarmine's Paulson deadlocked the match again in the 56th minute, reaching out to tap in a long cross from Krill.
Bellarmine will compete in two more matches this weekend. The Knights play at 1 p.m. (ET) Saturday at Mansfield and at 1 p.m. Sunday at Slippery Rock.
"Overall, we looked better today, which was our goal," Blankenbaker said. "We need to keep improving and get ready for two games this weekend."
